How does the sensor (probe) move?

The measuring is that it pulls the probe back into the surface roughness device, then return back, this is the direction that the sensor moves, so make sure the cut off length, assessment length you set is proper for roughness required but not across passed the measuring area. Take the Traversing Length as reference (how many distance the sensor will move) around 0.5mm+assessment length +one cut off length.

The cut off length (lr)

0.25,0.8,2.5mm

Assessment length(ln)

Ln= lr×n   n=1~5

If you calibrate the surface roughness tester, using a provided calibration block (specimen), you are measuring the matte area, the RA value indicated at the side is the value for matte area, as above said, the sensor will be pulled back into the surface roughness device, you will know where to put the tester on...

as a reminder, the specimen should put into the specimen holder for standard measurement.

What is sampling length?

The cut off length is the length of a reference line characterized by surface roughness texture.

Recommended sampling length

If the Ra value is between 0.32-2.5mm, usually, sampling length using 0.8mm on gauge setting, see below table.

The sampling length and assessment Length already set before shipping out, you can see in the main interface.
